Canon EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II: New Flagship Mirrorless Cameras Unveiled

Canon Unveils Top Models EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II

Canon has announced the launch of its flagship full-frame mirrorless cameras, the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, aiming to set new benchmarks in professional photography and videography. According to a press release from Canon, these models are designed to elevate both fields to unprecedented levels of performance.

Cutting-Edge Imaging Technology

At the heart of the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II lies Canon's new imaging platform, featuring the groundbreaking "DIGIC Accelerator" paired with the advanced "DIGIC X" image processor and a newly developed high-speed image sensor. The DIGIC Accelerator incorporates an AI accelerator that enhances autofocus capabilities and in-camera image processing. It includes features such as noise reduction, claimed by Canon to improve image quality by up to two ISO stops, and upscales JPEG/HEIF images to four times their original resolution. This integration aims to deliver superior performance in autofocus, continuous shooting, and overall image quality.

Enhanced Autofocus and Advanced Image Sensors

Canon's latest models boast the new Dual Pixel CMOS AF, termed Dual Pixel Intelligent AF, known for its precise tracking capabilities. It excels in sports photography, recognizing faces and upper bodies of athletes even during interruptions in line of sight. An "Action Priority" mode automatically identifies common gameplay sequences in sports like soccer, basketball, and volleyball, ensuring optimal subject tracking in dynamic scenarios.

The inclusion of Eye-Control AF in both cameras, enhanced from the EOS R3, allows for rapid and intuitive subject selection even in complex scenes.

High-Speed Performance and Enhanced Video Capabilities

The new image sensors in the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II enable higher capture speeds and faster sensor readouts, significantly reducing rolling shutter distortion by up to 60% compared to previous models. A pre-capture function captures up to 20 frames (EOS R1) or 15 frames (EOS R5 Mark II) before fully depressing the shutter button.

In video mode, both cameras support internal recording of 12-bit RAW videos with four-channel audio onto the memory card. They also offer Cinema EOS Movie Recording formats, complemented by Canon Log 2 and 3 with proxy video recording capabilities.

Professional Connectivity and Ergonomics

Both cameras feature Wi-Fi 6E, including operation in 6 GHz bands, 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (EOS R1, optional for EOS R5 Mark II), and dual-thread FTP (EOS R1) for seamless connectivity in professional workflows.

Canon EOS R1 – Professional Camera for Sports and News Photography

The EOS R1 is Canon's latest flagship designed specifically for the demands of sports and news photography, inheriting the legacy of the original EOS-1 series introduced 35 years ago. Key focus areas during its development were powerful autofocus and high-speed continuous shooting capabilities, facilitated by a new AF system featuring cross-type sensors never before seen in a Canon camera.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II – Hybrid Camera for Photo and Video

Building on its predecessor, the EOS R5 Mark II targets a broad spectrum of applications from wildlife and wedding photography to event coverage and video production. Highlighted by a back-illuminated full-frame sensor with 45 megapixels, the camera supports continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second with full autofocus and utilizes AI upscaling to achieve images up to 180 megapixels.

In video mode, the EOS R5 Mark II records 8K videos at up to 60 frames per second across the full sensor width, and 4K videos at up to 120 frames per second, boasting enhanced synergy with the Cinema EOS series.

Robust Build and Endurance

Canon enhances durability with a new, more powerful LP-E6P battery and a magnesium alloy body designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. Despite these improvements, the cameras maintain a compact and lightweight design, featuring a dual-brightness viewfinder with a larger eyepiece compared to the EOS R5.
